From the boredom of the 1932 Depression, the West Hills Area Women's Club, then known as The Coraopolis Junior Women's Club, was organized in that year and then federated in 1933. The first meeting was held November 11, 1932 at the home of MIss Sara Jean Way.
In 1949, together with the Century Club, the women formed the Congress of Clubs and established a clubhouse. In 1968, the club purchased a house on Ridge Avenue in Coraopolis, PA and for many years held meetings and social funtcions there.
The first members' interests were in their community and women worked to better it. As the community and club membership grew, a name change was needed and in 1971 it became the West Hills Junior Women's Club.
The Juniors found it necessary to withdraw from the Congress of Clubs in 1979 due to the financial burden of maintaining a large home and, because more and more members were working outside the home, less time was given to service the the clubhouse.
The meetings were then moved to the Robin Hill Mansion in Moon Township and to other area locations. The club voted to drop "Junior from its name in 1988 and adopted its current name, The West Hills Area Women's Club.
In 1995, the club voted to leave the federation, hoping to focus instead on its own communities. Meetings were moved to the present location, St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Moon Township. In 2003 the club was incorporated and achieved the designation of a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. THe club continues to grow and serve the western suburban communities of Allegheny County. For 75 years its members have continued a legacy of giving and volunteering.
The purpose of the club is to develop civic, educational and social interests among its members and to advance the welfare of the community.
Each year the club works to raise funds to support a variety of charitable organizations, with most of the funds raised staying in the local communities. Past projects have included playground equipment in the parks, library infrastructure and collections. fire and police equipment, mammograms for underserved women, local food pantries and scholarships for graduating women in the communities we serve who demonstrate outstanding commitment to life long community service. |
